Truly, I think I feltmore queasy because of my pregnancy announcementthan Ieverdid when managing morning sickness. So, with expectations of halting some future (prospective) working moms from falling into this equivalent snare, Ive inventoried my greatest mental detours and what you can do to turn it around when youre nervousness ridden about creation your pregnancy announcement. Why do we dread enlightening associates regarding pregnancies? My stress: I thought I was allowing everybody to dow n. Being a pregnant lady accompanies its physical afflictions however this mental second can be similarly as tough. After I shared my news, met individuals with embraces and high fives, I understood I was my own most exceedingly awful enemy. The fix: wipe out the negative self-talk.Most of myanxietywas established in negative self-talk that continued going through my thoughts:theyll think youre surrendering, they wont pay attention to you any longer, theyll think you dont value the professional success youve been given. Rather, reaffirm yourself, advising yourself that this a typical advance and that you will in any case be the expert you were before your pregnancy. In the event that your associates know you, they will know this as well. What are your worries?I discovered I was pregnant soon after being granted a higher position and an extraordinary huge undertaking. Resume Writing: Do Not Use Objectives in Your Resume

Resume Writing: Do Not Use Objectives in Your ResumeOne of the many pitfalls that people who are putting together their first job search can fall into is the practice of taking the form of the potential interview subject's resume and filling it with all kinds of strange things, which are going to sound all right in a resume, but which are completely at odds with the professional tone that is essential to getting the interviewer to take the time to really pay attention to the objective statement. This can be a big mistake. The objective is the most important part of your resume, and it must be able to clearly and concisely set out what you are looking for in a position. It needs to make you stand out from the crowd. If you have something else in there that makes the employer wonder if you have put some thought into the job and if you have included objective statement, chances are they will not even consider your resume. Before you go ahead and include anything other than the most import ant factors that should be included in your resume, make sure that the way you are writing it does not do any of those things. To begin with, you should always include your name in the objective. The only time you may include some other titles or references would be if they are something that goes beyond the job function that you are trying to fill, or if the employer requests your contact information. Before you can use the objective statement in your resume, you need to understand the company's objectives. Not only do they differ between different employers, but your own personal objectives may also vary based on the time of year, or what the job entails, or what the company is looking for in specific. Knowing these things can help you put together a powerful and convincing essay about what you are looking for in a new job.You also need to consider using the letter of reference that is found in the call sheet. Use this letter to support the information that you provide about yourse lf and your skills, rather than simply using it as a means of including a contact or a reference. It is possible that this letter could end up getting omitted from your resume or could be used as supporting information for someone else to provide. Most of the time, your objective statement will also be incorporated into your employment contract or placement letter. This is a good idea because the second part of the two-sided document, the cover letter, is where you give a concise overview of the positions that you have applied for and why you feel that you are right for the position. Most people who are hired have jobs that go through the entire process of being described and explained.Another important part of your resume is going to be your cover letter. There are many different things that you can do when you write a cover letter, such as offering a little something extra that is personal to you and your personality, or giving an introduction that tells the reader a little bit abo ut who you are and what you can do for them. Make sure that the cover letter is as enticing as possible. When you include a cover letter with your resume, your reader should be prompted to read it over carefully. Your cover letter is an important element to your resume, and it is critical that it is comprehensive and appealing. Keep these pointers in mind when you are writing your resume and be sure to put them into practice.

Wanted more women in banking Viewpoint careers advice blog

Wanted more women in banking Since the financial crisis erupted in 2008, there have been increasing calls around the world to hire more women in finance and banking, especially at senior level. A 2009 gender analysis by the UK Equality and Human Rights Commission on employment in the finance sector showed that the number of female managers in the financial sector is similar to the national average at 34%, but just 11% of corporate managers and senior executives in banking are women. The effects of this disparity go far beyond arguments of equality and fairness. Indeed, Christine Lagarde, head of the IMF and a passionate advocate of parity in banking, has gone as far as suggesting more female players in the industry may help prevent a repeat of the credit crunch. Speaking in June 2013, she said: “Women bring a better balance of risk and reward in business and finance. I have joked that a ‘male’ culture of reckless financial risk taking was at the heart of the global crisis. Companies with more women on their boards have higher sales, higher returns on equity, and higher profitability.” The world’s largest banks and financial institutions have acknowledged that a lack of female leaders could hurt the industry and are actively trying to recruit more women. The Bank of England, for instance, has taken action, on the recruitment front and with existing staff by championing the option and availability of flexible working arrangements. This has quickly paid off: in 2012, 44% of its graduate recruits were women, up from a long-term average of around 29%; and women now make up 32% of its management positions. Meanwhile, in February 2014, Lloyds Banking Group became the first FTSE 100 company to set targets for female executive numbers, pledging to have 40% of its top 5,000 jobs occupied by women within six years. The bank’s chairman, Sir Win Bischoff, is a founding member of the 30% Club â€" an initiative that encourages UK companies to aim higher than the Davies Review 25% target, setting a goal of at least 30% female representation on boards by 2015. Despite the banks’ efforts to hire more female graduates and help women stay with the sector and break the glass ceiling, why do women remain under-represented in the industry? For my colleague Yvonne Smyth, director at Hays and chair of our Hays Leading Women initiative, the phenomenon starts as early as when school children are receiving career advice. “We see a tendency for girls to be more attracted to the arts rather than STEM subjects. They consider longer questions of work/life balance from an early stage in their career plan, perhaps too early. The lack of female role models in financial services for young girls and those moving through the early to mid stages of their career can exacerbate this. ” The Hays Leading Women initiative was born as a result of the frequent discussions and reviews of staffing requirements our consultants had and continue to have with our clients, particularly in relation to the more senior level appointments of today and planning for the workforce of the future. Yvonne explains. “The discussion often moves to why there aren’t enough senior women in their business, which is a cause for concern, both from a commercial and cultural perspective. Taking the lessons from today and applying them to engage with the workforce of tomorrow is the shared goal of many organisations. ” Hays’ initiative looks to engage with all sectors and roles at all the industries where women are underrepresented, not just banking. “It continues to be a pressing issue and one which shows no signs of going away. The government and leadership teams of big business are fully behind this and there are many initiatives that aim to introduce and bring girls into the technica l workplace.” She cites the UK government’s new Your Life campaign, which brings together industry and educators to show how the science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects can lead to exciting, fulfilling and successful careers. Hays Leading Women acts at different levels of a woman’s career and through its programme of activities engages with females at all stages in their career with shared purpose of connecting women to the world of work, from school girls through to established professionals. Naomi Crawford, Head of Business Management, EMEA Compliance, at JPMorgan Chase, points out: You get a lot of women coming in from university and they probably stay up to the point where they want their first child. Once children come into the picture, a lot of women decide it becomes a work/life balance discussion between children and work. That’s when the industry starts losing women. Naomi says that as a response a lot of firms like JP Morgan offer flexible working â€" the ability to work from home, perhaps one or two days a week, or to work a shorter week. “This is not just for women with children, but also for men. It is important that management know when people need to take time out for family-orientated activity, be it their child’s assembly, or elderly parents/relatives who need extra support.” As of 27th June, in the UK, every employee has the right to request flexible working hours after the government extended the right previously reserved for carers and those looking after children. JP Morgan has a global site for women that gives them an opportunity to become inspired while getting to know what it is like to work in a bank. As Naomi points out, joining a bank can be a great opportunity. “You get to do some exciting things, working with great people, in a dynamic environment, which may even offer travel. It is a great place to start your career.” To share your thoughts on this article and to stay up to date with the latest business, employment and recruitment news in the financial markets sector, please join our LinkedIn group. But this presumptuousness can reverse discharge, and unexpectedly we are holding broken pieces of a standing work area despondently. What turned out badly? It looked so natural to expand on the screen!According to another study published in Psychological Science, we will in general figure we can turn into a specialist of an expertise subsequent to watching it done in a video. The scientists Michael Kardas and Ed O'Brien considered this the figment of ability acquisition.Learning from a video is simpler said than doneIn various trials, the analysts enlisted members to watch instructional recordings on moonwalking, playing darts, and beating an online computer game. At that point, the members were approached to foresee how well they would do the aptitude and endeavor the skill.Turns out, viewing a video on circle doesn't make an interpretation of to having the option to do the ability being educated on circle. Kardas and O'Brien found that the more individuals simply watch others perform (without really rehearsing themselves), the more they in any case accept they could play out the expertise. People who viewed the video on various occasions anticipated that they would perform better than the gathering who viewed the video just a single time. At the end of the day, it didn't make a difference if the members viewed a video once or multiple times - the members earned low execution scores, paying little mind to how often they had viewed a how-to video. From certainty to hubrisWatching recordings expands our certainty into hubris. After viewing a presentation, individuals may hop directly into aptitudes that surpass their flow capacities or financial plan too brief period for rehearsing them, the scientists cautioned. Watching without rehearsing breeds certainty yet not really learning. To evade these snares, you have to go one stage past viewing the vid eo from your love seat, and really experience the nuances inside the entertainer's aptitudes for yourself. On the off chance that you get a kick out of Schadenfreude, you may have psychopathic inclinations On the off chance that you get a kick out of Schadenfreude, you may have psychopathic inclinations Do you take mystery amuse when you watch others bomb in their professions? Do you love viewing your associates lose? Germans have a name for this behavior, Schadenfreude, which means hurt euphoria, and now another examination has connected it to dim character traits. For New Ideas in Psychology, a gathering of Emory University clinicians utilized a feeling model to exhibit how Schadenfreude can make us act like psychopaths. How Schadenfreude transforms us into brief psychopathsThe therapists took a gander at the feelings of hostility, competition, and equity to make a structure for getting Schadenfreude. They found that individuals who scored high on thedark set of three of character attributes - narcissism, psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and perversion - additionally will in general feel more Schadenfreude. They found that at the center of these feelings and inside the conduct of Schadenfreude is a longing to dehumanize the other. At the point when individuals experience Schadenfreude , they experience a [temporary] procedure like that accomplished by people with significant levels of psychopathic character characteristics: propelled by certain situational and to a lesser degree dispositional factors, the perceiver will in general dehumanize the person in question, briefly losing the inspiration to distinguish the casualty's brain, much like a mental case, the examination writes.Dehumanization, at the end of the day, assumes a focal job in Schadenfreude. At the point when you don't imagine someone else's perspective, you can separate yourself from feeling compassion for that individual's misfortunes. The situations that evoke fun at others' expense, for example, intergroup clashes, will in general likewise advance dehumanization, Shensheng Wang, one of the creators of the investigation, said in a statement. The uplifting news is this dehumanizing feeling blurs away and doesn't remain with us. Returning to Work How to Handle the Employment Gap

Coming back to Work How to Handle the Employment Gap Coming back to Work How to Handle the Employment Gap Use your volunteer understanding to support your resume and extend your system during the activity search.Q: I haven't worked outside the home but to chip in for a long time and can't get a meeting. I realize I can carry out the responsibility yet how would you get that across? â€" Doreen M.A: It can be so baffling when you realize you have an incentive to add to an organization yet can't get your foot in the entryway. Your story is extremely normal with full-time guardians who left the corporate world to raise their families and now need (or need) to reemerge the workforce, and with the individuals who were laid off and had to take on a string of lower-paying employments to take care of the tabs. In these circumstances, I suggest doing two things:Update your brandIt's so essential to have a resume and online profile that exhibit your important ranges of abilities and achievements, while likewise indicating that you haven't been wasting time since you left the corporate world. Here' s the arrangement: In the event that your humanitarian effort (or other ongoing work understanding) can be legitimately tied back to your focused on work objectives, at that point utilize a customary ordered resume group. I couldn't care less on the off chance that they didn't pay you for the work â€" I give it a second thought if the experience helped you increase pertinent industry experience or assemble aptitudes that are essential to the jobs you're focusing on today. Ensure you outline the set of working responsibilities and chose achievements in view of your activity objectives â€" the situation is pertinence. On the off chance that your ongoing work experience doesn't bolster your activity objectives or you have a business hole because of instructive interests, vacations, and so forth., at that point your most logical option is to change to what we call an utilitarian (otherwise called half and half or results-situated) continue position. In a practical resume, the emphasis is put on your pertinent experience and the outcomes or achievements of that work. You incorporate sequential data and different jobs, yet those take a rearward sitting arrangement so the consideration remains on the ranges of abilities and aptitude that is legitimately identified with your focused on work. I'll be straightforward: I'm not the greatest fanatic of useful resumes, generally in light of the fact that enrollment specialists appear to incline toward the ordered configuration. Notwithstanding, in this sort of circumstance a practical configuration will improve work at situating your abilities and experience as they identify with your activity objectives. Snap on the accompanying connect to study distinctive resume formats.Invest in your networkWhenever you're confronting difficulties in the pursuit of employment â€" because of joblessness, vocation changes, etc â€" organizing turns out to be much increasingly imperative to your strategy. The more individuals you can meet inside your ideal profession, the more data you will increase about the commercial center, its fundamental players, and the potential open doors that are out there. It will enable you to calibrate your hunt to target organizations that have the most potential and would be the best fit for you. You'll figure out how the market has changed since you last worked in it, and if there are any ability holes you have to take care of so as to be increasingly alluring to potential managers. For example, I worked with a customer who was a senior advertising proficient during the 90s. At the point when she started searching for work once more, it became clear that she'd have to increase a superior comprehension of web based advertising and internet business to contend with other occupation searchers in her space.Your contacts can advocate for your benefit and help you by-pass any guardians in the application procedure. The 2012 CareerXroads Source of Hire Survey found that you are multiple times bound to land a meeting if your application incorporates a worker referral. The all the more systems administration you do, the almost certain you are to discover individuals who are happy to pass your application along or permit you to remember their name for the application procedure. What's more, don't lim it the individuals you've met while chipping in! While they may not work in your focused on profession, who's to state they don't have companions or relatives who do?

Its Tougher at the Bottom Why All Students Should Work Minimum Wage (at Least Once)

It's Tougher at the Bottom Why All Students Should Work Minimum Wage (in any event Once) 16 Flares 16 Flares Veronica Park is a creator, writer and world-explorer of a wide range of past and future employments. Look out for her initially distributed novel, which will ideally be reported soon. Meanwhile, you can find out about her adventures in the Caribbean and discover her sentiment on essentially everything by following her on Twitter (@VeroniKaboom) and looking at her website. At the point when I was in secondary school, I was one of only a handful not many fortunate understudies to participate in an exploratory school inside a school program. Much the same as various significant projects in school, my school region concluded it may be a smart thought to give 11-twelfth graders profession driven, school educational plan enlivened involvement with their preferred field (for example medicinal services and social administrations, business, expressions, and so forth.) As an understudy of the Institute of Business, I was fortunate enough to have particular preparing in disciplines most secondary school understudies won't experience except if they explicitly search them outâ€"explicitly, abilities like website architecture, charge readiness, money related arranging, promoting and business introductions. Since we were so best in class in our examinations (yet not in real practice, in light of the fact that the greater part of us didn't have genuine employments by then), it appeared to be practically ludicrous when our instructors proposed seven days in length pretending meeting to show us how to act during a prospective employee meeting. Clearly, the vast majority of us thought we realized that how will generally be well mannered and answer inquiries regarding ourselves, so relatively few of us paid attention to this action very. Particularly when we found that rather than artificial meeting for grandiose future vocation type occupations, we'd claim to look for positions as Starbucks baristas and American Eagle retail moves. Envision our unexpected when we showed up that day for school, dressed to the nines, and discovered genuine Starbucks and American Eagle representatives from the nearby shopping center prepared to barbecue us. One AE fellow, who was most likely in his mid twenties, solicited us to do an impression from a bird's pleased, lofty cry. Another caused us to exhibit how to appropriately crease some pants without indicating the inseam. Sure about my own capacities to make astute reactions with almost no planningâ€"or, in less expert terms, BS like a champâ€" I wound up totally flummoxed by the Starbucks chief who solicited me to present the history from Starbucks, depict where espresso beans originate from, and clarify the distinction between French dish and a house mix. The best part was, these individuals weren't trolling us since we were secondary school understudies. These inquiries questions were totally standard for the organizations they spoke to. I later took in this through close to home involvement with (a non-mock setting) when I went to a gathering meeting for a situation as a regular specialist at Victoria's Secret. I was 18, and I'd worked enough genuine occupations and temporary positions by that point, I viewed myself as a professional interviewee. My resume was immaculate, if somewhat uncovered. At the danger of seeming like a showoff, I thought I'd be head and shoulders over different up-and-comers, paying little mind to the way that I'd never worked retail. I was a fantastic understudy, at a top college, and I had a ton of extremely amazing capabilities. How hard would it be able to be? At long last, I kept going at that specific employment not exactly a month. Since, while I'd some way or another figured out how to endure the Hunger Games style bunch meet, as it turned out I was unable to deal with the everyday routine of restocking bras until three toward the beginning of the day just to bring home a check that scarcely enhanced my two different occupations, and just gave me a 10% markdown for sure. To those of you who have figured out how to endureâ€"and even flourishâ€"in the retail condition, I intend no lack of regard. Truth be told, I salute you. It takes a truly intense, persevering and humble individual to have the option to endure the sort of things retail laborers experience every dayâ€"continually modifying cunning presentations, just to have them destroyed and re-destroyed many occasions, arranging returns on things plainly worn, checking costs all over continually by handâ€"also the torment these destitute individuals frequently suffer because of incen sed occasion customers during entryway buster deals. On the off chance that you can do all that with a grin, I'm considerably increasingly dazzled. Also, more than that, I would consider employing you on those grounds alone. Which carries me to the essential issue of this article: it's TOUGHER to endure, not to mention prevail at the base than it is at the center, or even the top. I couldn't cut a profession out of my modest the lowest pay permitted by law starting points, as certain individuals have splendidly done, yet I spent over seven years as a server at different eateries, working my way through student and post-graduate understudy advance reimbursement on tips and a measly $2.13 60 minutesâ€"which scarcely secured personal duties, more often than not. Despite the fact that I haven't got a ticket book in years, I despite everything consider those years as the absolute best preparing I at any point got as far as life exercises and profession experience. Let me reveal to you why: 1. Meeting Skills I don't know why, yet passage level and the lowest pay permitted by law employments appear to have progressively troublesome and flighty meeting methods. Regardless of whether it's the abnormal dynamic of a gathering meeting, or an off-the-divider question tossed in there to cause you to feel awkward and perceive how you respond, or the once in a while unusual strategy intended to perceive how far you'll go to land the position, (for example, Red Robin's previous wear an ensemble to the meeting rule, or ColdStone Creamery's sing and move segment of their standard gathering meeting.) Honestly, I would advocate for guardians compelling their secondary school understudies to at any rate go to 3-4 of these kinds of meetings, regardless of whether they don't need the activity. Just to perceive how they toll. 2. People Skills (otherwise known as Grace and Professionalism Under Pressure) Working in a lowest pay permitted by law, administration industry position is the most ideal approach to figure out how to manage individuals. Undoubtedly. A wide range of individuals. Considerate individuals, inconsiderate individuals, loners, outgoing individuals, old individuals and youngsters, rich individuals and tightwads the same. Being here and there compliant to others resembles glancing through an exceptional channel that permits you to see the genuine boundaries of human instinct. I once served a lady who began crying in her morning meal omelet, and it wasn't until I'd compassionately investigated her for five minutes before she conceded that her omelet should have cheddar on it, however she was too modest to even consider correcting the misstep and felt remorseful for enlightening me concerning it. At that point, there was the person who shouted at me for around ten minutes in a row, and requested to talk with my supervisor, since we were out of Diet Pepsi, and didn't I r ealize this was America? On the off chance that you can figure out how to genuinely comprehend and help these sorts of individualsâ€"not simply set up with themâ€"while keeping up an expert and amenable disposition, you're fundamentally en route to turning out to be the executives material. Regardless of what profession way you decide to wind up in. For whatever length of time that there's kin to be managed, these exercises can be applied all around. 3. Budgeting You will never be as appreciative, or as cautious, with your check as you are the point at which you're making sufficiently only to clear the neediness line. I couldn't care less in the event that you've been living off understudy advances, or getting a recompense from the time you were five. There's in no way like understanding that consistently you work has a sticker price, to cause you to understand the estimation of each penny you spend. For me, it wasn't until I'd landed my first position that I began to liken an excursion to the cinema with two hours of scooping dessert. Afterward, it was that pair of Steve Madden boots I truly needed, yet which cost around three lunch movements to purchase. Nothing puts planning into point of view like exchanging your life away in hourly additionsâ€"particularly when you see your check, and acknowledge the amount of what you gain is going to charges. A few financial analysts state that the young people of America are excessively pleased to work the lowest pay permitted by law, and that is the reason we're having the across the country business issues we're having. I don't feel able to say something regarding this discussion, at any rate not on a sociological scale. Yet, I will say that if those financial analysts are right, the young people of America should reexamine their position. Valid, you probably won't be all around treated, and you probably won't get especially cash-flow, however beginning from the base and stirring your way up is an interest in your future achievement. So consider the possibility that you need to wear a privateer outfit, or sing a humiliating melody for your tips. You can generally snicker about those parts later (or for my situation, use them as fun stories for an article about vocation building).

Whats new in my world

Whats new in my world I really try to stay away from these kinds of update posts for various reasons, but I feel like my blogging has been too sporadic over the last year or two.  So here are some updates on what we are working on: Im not travelling as much as I used to When my LinkedIn book came out I was on the road quite a bit, and in demand.  Since there are probably close to 50 books on LinkedIn now that has changed.  Ive had many requests to speak for free, or when people find out there is a fee, they find their cousin or some local social media expert to come in Im told those guys will do it for a free lunch.  More power to them.   Pros and cons of not travelling as much. I miss my new friends in my favorite places, including Maryland/Virginia, Minneapolis, Silicon Valley and East Bay, and Phoenix (what am I forgetting?). Also, I have never marketed myself as a professional speaker, so I didnt maintain a pipeline of potential gigs.  My professional speaker friends do a lot of marketing and can be on the road a lot, but Ive always just kind of sat back and waited for the calls to come in.  That dried up as more and more people entered the social marketing space. Im doing a lot of video recording and webinars I feel like Im always working on yet another video deadline, and I see no end in sight. I need to redo all of my JibberJobber videos, and finish the fourth edition of the LinkedIn for Job Seekers video.  Ive also been doing career management courses for Pluralsight, catering to IT professionals.  My hope is to build them a world-class career center video library. Its been fun but each course is really a huge undertaking.  Considering how many hours I would be on the road for one presentation (or a week of presentations), I kind of prefer this alternative I get to see my family more, and no hotel bed is better than my own bed JibberJobber is moving forward in important ways I have two developers and a QA professional working for JibberJobber, and we continue to have a ton of projects were working on.  Certain metrics have improved greatly over the last year, and were working on design and user processes (UI/UX) like never before.  Its hard to manage the this would be a cool/useful feature! and we need to go back and clean up some stuff and we need this to be more intuitive.  Intuitive means simple, but the stuff JibberJobber helps with is not necessarily simple.  Making the very complex very simple is not very easy.  But thats the challenge weve signed up for! My books are always on my mind I need to update the LinkedIn book, the Facebook book just got a massive upgrade, and it feels SO GOOD to have the 51 Alternative to a Real Job book done! I wish I had more time to market each of them.  The messages are excellent and needed, I just need another 24 hours each day!  I have a few others in mind, and am thinking about giving the ebook market a serious run.  Well see if I can fit that into my list of priorities.  Ive just finished a course on authoring books for Pluralsight and its really on my mind. I might schedule another live webinar, but Im kind of nervous As a reference, I had an awesome webinar on January 17th this year.  The next morning I was on the operating table having an emergency surgery. If I schedule another webinar, will I only be jinxing myself?  Really, Im not superstitious but  After all of this research, though, I think Im positioned to give a KILLER webinar on writing and marketing a book. There is money to made as an author, and what it does for your brand is amazing.  I might decide to do that. I should schedule it for January 17th just to spit in the face of superstition I have also been writing somewhat regularly on my 51 Alternatives to a New Job blog, as well as my LinkedIn blog, and sometimes on my Jason Alba blog but its been a big time management battle this year. So thats whats going on in my world.  What did I miss?  What can you tell me about whats going on in your world? Top 10 Ways to Impress in an Interview

Top 10 Ways to Impress in an Interview Your CV  may land you an interview, but its how you come across in the interview process that will really determine whether you land the role or not. The interview is your chance to really sell yourself and let your personality shine through. Its important to be memorable, so be sure to answer in a way that will make you stand out from the crowd and demonstrate that you are a cut above the rest. On top of providing well thought out responses to anything you may be asked, its also essential for you to present yourself smartly and confidently. Everything from the way you dress on the day, to the body language  you use, will contribute to the impression you give off. To be sure that you make the  best first impression possible at an interview, here are 10 tips that you should follow, courtesy of Armstrong Appointments. 1. Be prepared: Its important that you have done your homework before attending the interview, so make sure you research what exactly the company does and what the role you are interviewing for entails. Its also good to know who your interviewer is and what their role is in the company. 2. Dress smartly: Although people say you shouldnt judge a book by its cover, its likely that a lot of people do to some extent and the way you present yourself for an interview can often reflect your general attitude towards the job. So make sure you present yourself smartly and dress your best  to prove that you are serious about landing the role. 3. Be punctual: Turning up late will only reflect badly on you, so make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get there. If you are not familiar with the location, plan your route ahead of the day, or even do a practice journey so you know where youre going and how much time you need to give yourself. Arriving 15 minutes early is recommended as it shows youre dedicated and have good time management skills. 4. Turn your phone off: It wouldnt look very professional if your phone were to go off mid-interview, so make sure you have switched it off before going in to avoid disturbances or distractions. 5. Give a firm handshake: A firm handshake will demonstrate confidence, however dont go overboard,  there is a happy medium between a limp handshake and one that could potentially leave your interviewer with an injury! 6. Flash a smile: Dont underestimate the power of being friendly. By smiling and making eye contact, you will come across as more approachable and it will help to make a connection with your interviewer. 7. Control your body language: Body language is important in an interview, as it can give away a lot about how you are feeling. Make sure you sit up straight and maintain eye contact, as it will prove that you are interested and your full focus is on your interviewer. Slouching or glancing around the room can indicate a lack of interest and your interviewer may not think you are serious about the job. 8. Take  notes: Jot down everything that you think may be important in your interview. Not only is it good reference for you after the interview, but it will show that you are paying attention to everything your interviewer is saying and have a genuine interest in the role. 9. Bring  a copy of your CV: Although its likely that your interviewer will have a copy of your resume to hand for the interview, its a good idea to take up-to-date copies of your CV with you, for yourself and your interviewer. You can then refer to it throughout your interview, when discussing previous experiences and achievements. 10. Ask questions: An interview should be a two way exchange, so its essential that you ask questions of your own. Prepare a list of questions before you go, as well as asking questions that pop into your head throughout the  conversation. Top image: Shutterstock RELATED: 5 Essential Tips for Interview Success

Essay Writing Tips for Beginners

Essay Writing Tips for Beginners Students are required to write an essay at some point in their life. They have to comply with course requirements, write personal statements, present their research and others. It forms part of their academic career, yet it is so amazing that many students still lack a basic understanding of how to write and complete a proper paper. Writing is a skill developed through practice. Beginners may find that there are lots of frustrating points in academic writing. You would run out of words to write or find it hard to grasp the right words to express your thoughts. You also worry about your grammar, punctuation, and flow. But with every essay you complete, you become more confident in writing your next. The first one is always the hardest because of your hesitations. Here are a few tips for beginners to get you started with your first essays. Do Your Research For your essays to matter, it should be well researched and not just a bunch of blabber without facts to back it up. You start your essay writing journey by doing some research and taking note of your findings. It will prove that you have sufficient knowledge of your topic and you can present factual evidence when your work scrutinized. For starters, you cannot write about something when you do not know anything about it. You can practice writing by discussing the data you have gathered through your research. List Your Ideas for Brainstorming Brainstorming is a kind of design collection for different purposes. Many writers who feel at lost for words simply list ideas or phrases from which they can derive sentences from. You can record ideas without restraint. Then, when you become more critical, you can eliminate those that are not relevant to your topic. You may be surprised with some ideas that you can list from a single sitting. It will be easier to proceed with your essay when you have something to start from. Analyze Your Ideas When you have a great list of ideas on your topics, you should analyze them and see which one fits your essay. You don’t need to elaborate on each one of the ideas you listed so choose and examine the best ones from your list. These will contribute to the weight and depth of your paper. Create an Outline of Your Thoughts An essay outline serves as a foundation for your writing. The content and flow of your work based on the outline you have created. So make sure that you have correctly positioned your thoughts to flow smoothly as you write. Place your thesis statement or argument at the start, and this will be followed by the information you derived from your research. Organize your thoughts so that it will all of your ideas pertain and point towards your argument, yet make it flexible as well so that you can adjust as you go on with your writing. Make Adjustments on Your Thesis Statement Along the line, you will learn that essays are written to adhere to guidelines and answer a thesis statement or your “argument.” Your essay will be a showcase of your skill in proving your point or argument. You can start your article with an explicit thesis statement and research facts and data on this, but as you move forward, you can continually adjust your account according to your opinion and the substance of your essay. Introduction, Body and Conclusion Some writers are more comfortable writing on the main body or explaining the primary information of the essay with the facts they have gathered and followed by the end before they start with the introduction. For some the introduction probably is the hardest to draft because you need to write the complete package of your paper in a couple of sentences and present it with flair to pique the interest of the reader. Editing and Proofreading Editing and proofreading your essay after days of writing and laboring can be a little too much especially for beginners. You can ask friends, mentors or pay someone to help you edit and check your work for readability and make sure that it is error free. With a little practice, you will soon realize that you are getting good at writing your essays and ready to face all writing requirements of your course. You can find more essay writing tips at online. Professional guidelines will improve your academic writing skills.

5 Steps to Outshine Your Competition In a Job Interview - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

5 Steps to Outshine Your Competition In a Job Interview - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career An interview is a business transaction wherein the objective of the hiring manager (the person who has the authority to hire) is to make a selection among job candidates called in for interviews. A candidate has two challenges: first, to convince the hiring manager that he is the ideal candidate for the position, and second, to outshine the others (i.e., the competition for the job). Following are several suggestions. First, prepare for the interview by working with a seasoned interview coach. An interview coach can practice with you certain mock-interviewing techniques, thereby helping you to not only answer difficult interview questions but also recognize traps and avoid saying the wrong things. As an interview coach, I need no less than five hours to get someone ready for the big test. If the result is to get the job, then the fee paid for such a service is merely a drop in the bucket. Second, prepare your SARBs: situation/action/result/benefit. These are short vignettes about your experience, describing for the interviewer how you solved problems on the job and the results and benefits to employers. They are the tools you bring with you to the interview. If presented well, the examples will convince the hiring manager you’re the right person for the job. Third, research the company. Spend some time in the public library investigating as much as you can about the company. You cannot overdo this aspect of the job search, and neither should you underestimate the importance of showing the interviewer you understandon either a macro- or micro levelthe issues the company faces.   Knowing details about the company improves the “cultural fit-factor”. Fourth, use your personal connections via LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter to discover as much information as you can about the people you’re going to interview with. While doing that, attempt to find something in common with them. This is very important, because people are known to hire candidates with whom they can build a relationship even during the interview process. And fifth and last but not less important, make sure the position you’re interviewing for aligns with your own needs and desires. Consider your skills and attributes and traits. Evaluate the organization’s work environment, the commute, the compensation, and the benefits. Pay attention to your gut feeling. If it feels good, make sure you clearly show your enthusiasm. This is what the hiring manager wants to “buy.”

The Four Levels of Language Proficiency in English Resume Writing

The Four Levels of Language Proficiency in English Resume WritingLevels of language proficiency in English resume writing are the four different levels of language proficiency. They all have been designed to meet the specific job requirements of employers. Many people use the term 'levels' as shorthand for degrees, though these may be equivalent. The four levels of language proficiency are writing proficiency, speaking proficiency, reading proficiency and listening proficiency. Each level of proficiency is associated with specific written materials and sometimes other levels of language proficiency. Let's look at each one.The writing proficiency level is simply the ability to read and write good English. Most people who write professionally require this level of proficiency, since they write regularly and are familiar with the language. Some employers prefer to hire an applicant with a higher level of writing proficiency. Even if your resume does not require this level of proficiency, it would be a plus if you can write well. The speaking proficiency level is simply the ability to speak properly in the English language. You can speak fairly well if you do not exceed the professional speaking range. For most people who only occasionally use English as their primary language, this level of language proficiency will suffice. If you often use English as your first language or you are able to speak better English than other native speakers, then this level of proficiency is needed by employers. The reading proficiency level is a shorthand for the ability to read written materials in good English. You should be able to recognize and identify the correct terms in a passage and to have a decent understanding of the format of a paragraph. It is important to be able to accurately interpret the data in a sentence, because many employers require this level of proficiency. Even if your resume does not require this level of language proficiency, it would be a plus if you can re ad well. It is also a plus if you have read the same books that are on your resume.Language proficiency is the ability to speak, read and write fluently in English. The word 'fluency' is a bit misleading, however, because it means that the applicant is able to deliver his or her speech and reading in a clear, fluent manner. This requires training and practice. Language proficiency is not the same as speaking, reading or writing fluency. The writing and speaking and reading fluency have different meanings. It is usually the case that a person can vary among these levels, but in general, each level is associated with skill, knowledge and experience. It is possible to be very well known for being an excellent reader, speaker and writer. However, if you cannot apply the skills you learned from intensive and ongoing training to your resume writing, it is unlikely that the employer will see you as a high quality candidate. Some people may claim that they have one level of language proficien cy, when they really have several levels. Because of this, the levels of language proficiency in English resume writing are an important tool to use to identify if an applicant is ready for the job.
